At age 36, only 3 months after giving birth to her daughter Lily Rose, Heather Von St. James was diagnosed with a very rare and deadly cancer called mesothelioma.
She was given just 15 months to live.
Upon learning of this life-altering diagnosis, with her husband, Cameron, she embarked upon a search to find the best mesothelioma treatment available. Their search led them to Dr. David Sugarbaker, a renowned mesothelioma surgeon at the Boston based Brigham and Women’s hospital.
Cameron had to learn quickly how to be an effective caregiver and there were times, he says, when he became overwhelmed and “beaten down” by this role. But with the help of Heather’s parents in South Dakota, who kept care of Lily when Cameron and Heather were traveling to doctor appointments and being in the hospital, they managed “to fight through it together.”
Today, Heather is a 7-year mesothelioma cancer survivor on a mission. Her mission is to help other mesothelioma victims around the globe. By sharing her personal story, she hopes to spread hope and awareness for others going through what she went through, so that “one day no one else will have to.”
This Sunday, June 2, is National Cancer Survivors Day. Cameron Von St. James has asked us to share Heather’s story in honor of this holiday and help spread awareness of this awful cancer.
We are honored to do this.
